How a visit goes

Here’s what happens, from the first message to the end of the visit.

Before the visit

  1. The charger.

Keep the device’s charger handy, near an outlet.

  2. The passwords.

Your computer password, and the one for your Apple, Google or Microsoft account. You can type them in yourself if you’d rather.

  3. The problem in one sentence.

When it started, and the error message if there is one. A photo of the screen taken with your phone is enough.

During the visit

  • I work in front of you.

I sit down at your Mac, and you can watch if you like.

  • I tell you what I’ll do.

Before I touch anything, I explain what I plan to do and about how long it should take.

  • If your Mac has to leave, you know first.

I diagnose the problem at your place. If I can fix it on site, I do. If not, I tell you what it will cost and take the device for the repair.

At the end

  • You understand what was done.

I explain the problem and what I did, in plain words, and what you can do yourself next time.

  • Are your photos backed up?

Open System Settings, then General, then Time Machine. If no backup shows up, or the last one is months old, your photos live in one place only. I can set up the backup during the visit or remotely.

If it’s remote

The session starts only when you ask for it. You see everything I do on your screen, from start to finish.
